Dr. Anahita Azharian is a board-certified and fellowship-trained plastic surgeon at Finer You. As a woman, Dr. Azharian understands the unique and complex concerns that female patients face regarding their physical health and well-being. She is one of a few female plastic surgeons in Tampa Bay. She added labiaplasty to the practice in 2025, though the practice has been open since 2014. Her techniques draw on the same soft tissue work she has performed in other aesthetic and reconstructive procedures for far longer.

About Labiaplasty

A labiaplasty is a vaginal rejuvenation procedure that can improve the aesthetic appearance, comfort, and functionality of the labia minora. While it is natural for women to possess asymmetrical, elongated, or protuberant labia, these differences can occasionally create physical pain or self-consciousness, leading many women to search for a solution. By undergoing a labiaplasty with Dr. Azharian, you can reclaim control over your body and restore your sense of personal comfort and self-confidence.

What sets our practice apart is that, unlike many other aesthetic practices, the person you speak to at your consultation will be the surgeon who operates on you. Our procedures are also performed in our own accredited surgical center rather than an unaccredited office room. We also use a conservative appraoch when removing tissue, because your remaining tissue can always be revised. However, tissue that has been removed cannot be.

Personal Consultation

Attending your personal consultation is the first step to restoring your intimate comfort and confidence. During this meeting, Dr. Azharian will talk with you about several topics to assess your candidacy. She will ask you about your medical history, including medication, allergies, and any previous procedures.

She will also ask you about your motivations and desired results and perform a physical examination to assess your natural anatomy and skin quality. We ask that you are able to say specifically what bothers you, whether it is your labial appearance, symmetry, or symptoms.

Dr. Azharian will use this information to confirm your eligibility for labiaplasty and begin creating your treatment plan. She will determine which surgical technique will produce the best results and may suggest integrating additional procedures into your treatment plan, depending on your personal goals.

Throughout the consultation, Dr. Azharian will address any questions or concerns you may have. Many common concerns include whether the results will look natural, if the vaginal sensations will change, how long the recovery will take, whether your anatomy looks normal, and more. Dr. Azharian has found that many women who come in are convinced their labia looks unusual and are asking for comfort and symmetry, not correction. Preparation

Once you have decided to proceed with your procedure, you will need to make several preparations to ensure you are ready. To help, Dr. Azharian will provide you with a written set of instructions, which may include:

  • Refraining from using any medications or supplements that may thin your blood
  • Preparing reliable transportation home after your procedure
  • Arranging time away from your professional and personal responsibilities and commitments
  • Picking up any medications you will need as you heal
  • Ceasing any nicotine or alcohol use in the weeks leading up to your procedure 

Procedure

Dr. Azharian performs each procedure at our surgical center. She will meet with you one last time to answer any remaining questions before cleansing your skin and marking it as you are awake and positioned. She will then administer either local anesthesia or IV sedation, depending on your preferences. She will then proceed to excise your excess labial tissue using one of two commonly used surgical techniques. The surgical technique she uses will depend on your natural anatomy and may consist of: 

  • The Trim Technique: For the trim technique, Dr. Azharian trims the excess tissue from the edges of the labia. This technique is ideal if you have a significant amount of excess tissue or discoloration along the edges of the labia. 
  • The Wedge Technique: Dr. Azharian can perform the wedge technique by excising wedge from the central and most elongated part of the labia. This technique will be suitable for you if you have thicker tissue, the excess sits in the middle, and want to preserve the natural edge of the labia. (1) 

If necessary, Dr. Azharian may also perform a clitoral hood reduction or make corrections to the labia majora for more thorough results. The clitoral hood often carries excess tissue, and treating the labia and clitoral hood as one unit can help maintain balanced results. Once she has completed each of your corrections, she will close each incision in layers using fine, absorbable sutures. You will then rest until you are ready to return home.

Recovery

Dr. Azharian performs each labiaplasty on an outpatient basis, which means that you will be released from our care on the same day as your procedure. 

As you recover, you can expect to experience some swelling, bruising, and general discomfort. These effects are temporary and will subside on their own as your body continues to heal, but you may also manage them with plenty of rest and a cold compress. You should also avoid wearing any tight or form-fitting clothing as you recover, as it may irritate the treated areas.

While patient experiences may vary, you will likely return to work after resting for approximately one to two weeks. However, you will need to avoid strenuous tasks or intercourse for another 4 to 6 weeks, or until Dr. Azharian has cleared you to return. She will also have you return for a wound check within the first week to ensure you are healing properly.

She will provide you with a set of detailed recovery instructions before you undergo your procedure. These will guide you through incision care, activity restrictions, and managing any potential side effects. You must follow each one as she instructs, as the quality of your results will directly reflect the efforts of your aftercare. 

Results

Once you have fully recovered, you will be able to enjoy the full results of your labiaplasty. Your exact results will vary, but you can expect improved proportions, an elevated appearance, and a greater sense of confidence overall. If you previously experienced discomfort, you will also feel a sense of relief, especially when sitting, performing physical activities, and wearing tighter-fitting clothing.

Labiaplasty Risks

Every treatment and procedure has its own risks and complications. After each labiaplasty procedure, you can expect to experience some swelling and bruising. You may also notice some asymmetry, but this will be pointed out to you beforehand. You may also experience pain during intercourse, but this is usually from returning to these activities too soon.
The most common complication is the separation of the wound edge, which can be managed with local wound care. If over resection occurs, your surgeon will discuss a conservative approach to correcting it. Revision procedures are rare, but they may be performed after your tissues have fully settled and healed. Other uncommon complications include bleeding, hematomas, and infections, which will be addressed if they occur.

FAQ

What is the difference between the trim technique and the wedge technique?

The trim technique removes excess tissue from the edges of the labia, while the wedge technique removes a V-shaped wedge of tissue from the center of the labia. 

Can I give birth after undergoing a labiaplasty?

We recommend waiting until after you have given birth to undergo a labiaplasty. While you still can give birth, it may alter the appearance of your results. If you plan to have children, we ask that you discuss these matters with Dr. Azharian so she may tailor your procedure accordingly. 

Will a labiaplasty change my sexual sensation?

No, this procedure will not affect your sexual sensation. While you may experience temporary changes throughout your recovery, they will resolve on their own soon after. 

Will my labiaplasty leave noticeable scars?

Every surgical procedure leaves some degree of scarring. However, Dr. Azharian ensures that any scars left will be hidden within the natural folds and creases of your labia. Any scars will also fade and flatten as you continue to heal. 

Can Dr. Azharian combine my labiaplasty with another procedure?

Yes, Dr. Azharian can integrate several procedures to create more comprehensive results. During your personal consultation, she can provide you with personalized recommendations based on your medical history and desired results. 

Can a labiaplasty address both cosmetic and functional concerns?

Yes, they can address both cosmetic and functional concerns. Labiaplasty being a purely cosmetic procedure is a myth, and many of our patients come in for chafing, pain when wearing certain clothes, discomfort when exercising, and more.

Is there a difference between traditional labiaplasty and laser labiaplasty?

No, both procedures are the same. Laser labiaplasty features laser technology to excise your tissues, but this procedure is not superior to its counterpart, as they share the same focus and goals.
