Preparation
Once you decide to proceed with labiaplasty, Dr. Gerzenshtein will provide you with detailed pre-operative instructions. These instructions may vary depending on the details of your surgical plan, but they typically consist of:
- Discontinuing the use of blood-thinning medications and supplements.
- Ceasing the use of nicotine and alcohol in the weeks leading up to your procedure.
- Pre-arranging transportation home after your procedure.
- Preparing to take time away from your responsibilities.
- Filling any prescriptions beforehand.
Preparation is an essential step for each procedure, regardless of how subtle or significant the results will be. By following each instruction, you can ensure a successful procedure, smooth recovery, and optimal results.
Procedure
At the beginning of your procedure, Dr. Gerzenshtein will cleanse your skin and administer a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable. He will then perform one of two surgical techniques to remove your excess labial tissue:
- Trim Technique: The trim technique excises tissue from along the outer edge of the labia minora. This technique is ideal when addressing asymmetric or bulging labia.
- Wedge Technique: The wedge technique consists of removing a V-shaped portion of tissue from the center of the vaginal lips. This technique usually best suits those with more triangular-shaped labia or those with elongated labia that extend past the outer vaginal lips. (1)
Dr. Gernzenshtein may additionally address your labia majora or perform a clitoral hood reduction for more comprehensive and cohesive results. Once he has addressed each of your concerns, he will close each incision before allowing you to rest.
Recovery
Dr. Gerzenshtein performs labiaplasty on an outpatient basis, which means you will return home the same day as your procedure.
As you recover, it is common to experience swelling or bruising. These effects are temporary, and you will be able to manage them with plenty of rest and a cold compress. You will need to avoid wearing tight clothing during your recovery to avoid irritation. You may return to your career and other commitments after resting for one to two weeks; however, you will need to avoid physical and other strenuous activities until Dr. Gerzenshtein clears you to return. You will receive a set of detailed post-operative instructions before your procedure to help you navigate your recovery. These instructions will guide you through incision care, activity restrictions, and managing any potential side effects.
Results
You will be able to enjoy the full results of your labiaplasty once you fully recover. For patients who previously experienced discomfort during physical activity or while wearing tight-fitting clothing, there is often a sense of relief and improved comfort.
This procedure elicits high satisfaction rates exceeding 90% (1), with many women reporting greater confidence when engaging in a new relationship or sexual experience. (3)
Results from a labiaplasty are long-lasting, as the removed tissue cannot technically grow back. However, it is important to keep in mind that the tissues in the intimate region will continue to age, and results may change in appearance accordingly.
