About Liposuction
Liposuction aims to sculpt your figure by breaking down fat deposits and removing them. It has been the most performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the country since 2021, (2) with more than 349,728 procedures performed in 2024 alone. (3) Dr. Gerzenshtein performs a specific variation of liposuction called power-assisted liposuction (PAL) to achieve more precise, natural-looking results.
About Power-Assisted Liposuction
Power-assisted liposuction is a variation of traditional liposuction that incorporates a vibrating cannula to emulsify and suction fat out of the body more efficiently. (4) Dr. Gerzenshtein can use power-assisted liposuction to remove more fat in less time, allowing for more comprehensive results. The vibrating cannula reduces manual effort, allowing Dr. Gerzenshtein to concentrate on precise and even fat removal, which can result in smoother, more consistent body contours.
Tumescent Liposuction
This is the most common technique, where a saline solution mixed with anesthetic is injected into the treatment area to make fat removal easier and reduce bleeding. A small cannula (thin tube) is then used to suction out the fat through small incisions.
Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)
In this method, ultrasound energy is used to liquefy fat before it is removed, making it easier to extract fat from dense or fibrous areas.
Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL)
Laser energy is used to break down fat cells before they are suctioned out, promoting skin tightening and faster recovery.
Benefits
There are several benefits of liposuction, including:
- Effective Fat Removal: Liposuction can treat stubborn deposits of fat around the body, restoring a more defined, toned, and youthful-looking figure.
- Enhanced Confidence: Many patients report an improvement in their self-esteem and body confidence after seeing their renewed silhouette.
- Minimally Invasive Treatment: Liposuction utilizes small incisions only.
- Lasting Results: When paired with a healthy lifestyle, the results of liposuction are long-lasting and stable, as the removed fat cells cannot regenerate.
- Targeted Treatments: Liposuction can be used to contour most areas of the body where there is excess fat, allowing you to target specific areas and concerns.
- Customized Treatment Options: Each treatment plan is tailored around your unique concerns, ensuring that results align with your desired aesthetic.
Candidates
It is important to note that liposuction is a body-contouring method and not a weight-loss procedure, meaning patients should already be at, or near, a maintainable goal weight. Each candidate should also have good skin elasticity.
Each patient should be in good general health and hold realistic expectations for their results. Dr. Gerzenshtein will determine each individual’s candidacy during their consultation.
Personal Consultation
The first step to transforming your figure is attending a personal consultation at Finer You. Here, Dr. Gerzenshtein will meet with you one-on-one to discuss what liposuction entails. He will review your medical history, current prescriptions, concerns, and ideal aesthetic appearance, as well as perform a medical examination to evaluate your desired treatment areas.
Dr. Gerzenshtein will determine whether or not liposuction is right for you and start developing your tailored treatment plan. Each aspect of your plan will be designed around your unique anatomy and concerns to ensure your results are flattering and appear natural. Dr. Gerzenshtein will also take the time to answer any questions you may have.

Preparation
Dr. Gerzenshtein will provide you with a list of preparatory instructions. These may vary from patient to patient, but often include:
- Refrain from taking medications or supplements that can thin your blood.
- Stop using nicotine several weeks before the procedure, if applicable.
- Avoid consuming alcohol prior to your procedure.
- Arrange transportation home from your procedure.
- Schedule time away from work and other responsibilities to focus on recovery.
- Pick up any necessary medications or prescriptions before your procedure.
Procedure
Dr. Gerzenshtein typically performs this procedure with the patient receiving local anesthesia or with the use of sedation, ensuring patient comfort throughout the process.
After anesthesia administration, Dr. Gerzenshtein will make a small incision and inject tumescent fluid into the desired treatment areas. This solution is composed of epinephrine, saline, and a local anesthetic and is designed to minimize bleeding, swell the fat cells, and numb the treatment areas internally for easier fat removal. (4)
After allowing the solution time to settle, Dr. Gerzenshtein will then insert a thin cannula into the same incision. The PAL cannula is a specialized tool that helps suction fat with ease. It will vibrate rapidly to help break down and emulsify the fat in the area before it is suctioned out.
Recovery
Recovering from power-assisted liposuction is generally considered to be shorter and easier than traditional liposuction. As you heal, it is essential to follow each of Dr. Gerzenshtein’s recovery instructions to ensure a quick recovery and the best possible results.
It is common to experience swelling or tenderness in newly recontoured areas, but these temporary effects may be managed using pain medications or a cold compress. During this time, you will also be required to wear a compression garment provided by the Finer You team. This garment will help optimize healing, protect your new curves, and reduce swelling.
Most patients can return to light activities and desk work after several days, although you will need to refrain from engaging in strenuous or physical activities until cleared to return. Any further instructions will be discussed during your consultation.
Results
Once you have fully recovered, you will be able to see the full results of your liposuction procedure. The natural curves of your figure will be more defined, and the treated areas will appear more toned and slender. Many patients report an improvement in their self-esteem after seeing their renewed silhouette, leading to a greater sense of overall confidence.
The results of liposuction are designed to be long-lasting, as fat removal is essentially permanent. While liposuction permanently removes targeted fat cells, remaining fat cells in the surrounding areas can still increase in size. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and stable weight helps preserve your results over the long term.

FAQ
What is the difference between traditional and power-assisted liposuction?
Power-assisted liposuction uses a vibrating cannula to emulsify fat, while traditional liposuction relies primarily on manual movement to break up stubborn deposits. Power-assisted liposuction allows surgeons to focus more on precision and optimal results and minimizes damage to the surrounding tissues, often allowing for a shorter recovery.
What areas of the body can be contoured using liposuction?
Most areas of the body where there is excess stubborn fat can be contoured with liposuction, including the arms, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, legs, neck, and more.
Is liposuction a painful procedure?
Thanks to the use of anesthesia, liposuction itself is not considered a painful treatment. You may experience discomfort during your recovery, but this can be managed using pain medications and following aftercare instructions. The PAL method Dr. Gerzenshtein uses minimizes tissue damage, so recovery is typically considered more comfortable than more conventional counterparts.
Are the results of liposuction permanent?
The results of liposuction are designed to be long-lasting, as the removed fat cells cannot reappear once they are removed. However, a healthy lifestyle must be maintained as fluctuations in weight can alter the results of your procedure.
Can my liposuction be combined with another cosmetic procedure?
Yes, many patients choose to combine their liposuction procedure with another procedure for more comprehensive results. For personalized suggestions and further information, we encourage you to schedule a consultation.
