Open and closed revision rhinoplasty: what’s the difference?

Go Back to Revision Rhinoplasty

Open vs. Closed Revision Rhinoplasty: Understanding the Differences

To the layperson the only discernible difference between open and closed revision rhinoplasty is a very well concealed ¼ inch scar at the base of the front underside part of the nose, between the nostrils. Surgeons joke that the scar may be noted only by a patient’s dog, or lover. The remainder of the incision is made inside the nose in both cases. Some surgeons perform one type of revision rhinoplasty exclusively. The more versatile surgeon can utilize both techniques with the following logic.

The closed technique works well in less complicated cases, typically in removing a hump. The open technique is performed when correcting significant asymmetry, deviation, or when needing to do fine tip work. Open revision rhinoplasty and closed revision rhinoplasty are the two types of revision rhinoplasty procedures available. Open revision rhinoplasty is used to achieve great symmetry when doing tip work, while closed revision rhinoplasty is generally done for hump reduction.

What is Open Revision Rhinoplasty?

In open revision rhinoplasty, the surgeon creates a small incision on the columella, the strip of tissue between the nostrils. This approach provides direct access to the nasal structures, allowing for precise adjustments and extensive reconstruction if needed.

The Advantages of Open Revision Rhinoplasty

One of the key advantages of open revision rhinoplasty is the enhanced visibility it provides to the surgeon. Hence, with a clear view of the nasal framework, they can address complex issues, correct asymmetries, and refine the nasal shape with greater precision.

What is Closed Revision Rhinoplasty?

Closed revision rhinoplasty, also known as endonasal revision rhinoplasty, involves making all the incisions within the nasal passages. Unlike open rhinoplasty, there are no external incisions on the columella.

The Benefits of Closed Revision Rhinoplasty

Closed revision rhinoplasty offers certain advantages such as no visible external scarring, reduced operative time, and potentially faster recovery compared to open revision rhinoplasty. Many surgeons often prefer closed revision rhinoplasty for less extensive revisions or when minor adjustments to the nasal tip are needed.

Choosing the Right Technique Paragraph

The decision between open and closed revision rhinoplasty depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, desired outcomes, and the surgeon’s expertise. During a consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your specific needs and recommend the most suitable technique for achieving your goals.

Conclusion

Understanding the differences between open and closed revision rhinoplasty techniques is crucial in making an informed decision about your nose surgery. Consult with a skilled rhinoplasty specialist to determine the best approach for achieving your desired results.
