The “Tummy Tuck”
The abdominoplasty is a very popular plastic surgery procedure. Most people outside of the plastic surgery industry are aware of the abdominoplasty procedure and refer to it as as the tummy tuck.
The abdominoplasty procedure gives patients a more desirable physical appearance. The procedure removes excess fat and skin that surrounds the stomach. No one wants to have sagging, excessive skin and fat on their body, but this not always an easily obtainable result. Liposuction is another popular cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and fat and is minimally invasive with little recovery time. The abdominoplasty is much different from liposuction because it requires the patient to be put under general anesthesia. During surgery, the patient is cut across their lower abdomen and vertically down the center of the stomach.
Typically, tummy tuck patients have a two-week recovery time. The recovery process includes limited physical activity and requires the patient to wear a compressive garment to reduce swelling. Dressings and bandages are used directly after surgery and are kept on until the postoperative appointment.
Candidates for an Abdominoplasty
Most individuals seek after a flat and toned abdomen, however this result cannot always be achieved through exercise and weight management. There are many different factors that contribute to sagging, excess skin surrounding the abdomen. Weight fluctuation, pregnancy, prior surgeries, aging and heredity could all be causes of excess fat. An abdominoplasty is a highly individualized procedure and requires a medical consultation to determine whether or not a patient is a proper candidate for surgery. Ideal candidates are physically healthy and have reasonable expectations regarding their surgical outcome.
