The Abdominoplasty: Tips Following Abdominal Surgery

At Our office:
This may seem obvious, but please make sure you plan out your ride home since walking or driving yourself will not be an option. If you have any antibiotics that you received at your pre-operative visit, start those 24 hours before surgery. Also, make sure you have all of your discharge instructions with your post-operative visit scheduled for the day following your abdominal surgery.

While at Home:
Make sure you get plenty of rest. Your body is going to be extremely tired, it is very important that you give it the downtime it needs. At night, sleeping in a recliner will be your best and most comfortable option.

You are going to be in a lot of pain. Most of our patients find that the muscle relaxer is a lot more effective in minimizing pain and discomfort than any of the pain killers prescribed. Just make sure you read all the fine print of your medications to ensure you have no allergies or side effects.

Keeping a clean diet is another great tip following surgery. Make sure you take in lots of protein. Following surgery, drink lots of fluids and keep up with your daily vitamins. Especially water, if you start to become dehydrated water will help the recovery process. It will also remove toxins in the body. It is very likely that you will be constipated following your procedure so be sure to invest in stool softener.

An abdominal binder will be fitted to you during your pre-operative visit, and placed on right as you are waking up from surgery. This binder will help to keep everything in place and keep the patient from stretching out.
